You can be in multiple cells at the same time.
Cells are independent. You can be a parent in one cell, a sibling in another, a grandparent-companion in a third. Each cell has its own DNA balance, zone settings, role, mission list, and members. They don’t see each other. Your first cell is free; holding more than one of your own at the same time is a Premium capability — with one deliberate exception: a co-parented child rides a parent’s Premium at no charge to the child (see below).
You can belong to multiple cells at the same time, and each one is fully independent. You might be a parent in one cell, a sibling in another, and a grandparent-companion in a third — each with its own DNA balance, zone settings, role, mission list, and members. The cells don't see each other: your DNA in one doesn't cross over, a duty set in one isn't visible in another, and your role can differ from cell to cell.

To add a cell, go to Settings, Cells, and join or create another; whoever invites you decides your role. The home-tab cell-switcher lets you swap context with a tap, and notifications carry the cell name so you always know the source. If a household is recorded as a second home, the app may offer a second hearth for the child there — only ever from an explicit record or a self-set toggle, never inferred.
Independent state per cell
Every cell tracks its own everything. Your DNA in Cell A doesn’t cross over to Cell B. A duty you set in one cell isn’t visible in another. Your role can differ — you’re a parent in your immediate family’s cell and a peer in your sibling group’s cell.
A kid belonging to two parent-cells
For divorced or separated families: a child can belong to both parents’ cells. The child sees one unified view of their week ("Maya’s world") that merges both calendars; the parents don’t see each other’s cells, only the child’s shared view — co-parenting without sharing adult lives. Belonging to two cells is the multi-cell capability, so it rides on either parent’s Premium: whichever household has Premium covers the child, and the child is never charged to stay in both homes. If one household is recorded as a second home, the app may offer to set up a second hearth for the child there — that offer only ever appears from an explicit record or a setting a parent turns on themselves, never inferred from behaviour.
One cell is free; more than one is Premium
Your first cell costs nothing. Holding a second cell of your own at the same time — you in your family’s cell and also in your siblings’ cell, say — is a Premium capability. The one exception is a co-parented child: their membership in both parents’ homes rides on a parent’s Premium, so the child is never the one who pays to stay in both homes. Add or create a cell from Settings → Cells; whoever invited you (or the existing owner, if you’re creating) decides your role. You can leave a cell anytime, which forfeits its DNA balance but not your cosmetics or habit packs.
Switching between cells
The cell-switcher is on the home tab — a tap to swap context. Notifications carry the cell name so you always know which one a mission or duty came from. The first-launch widget defaults to the cell you used most recently.
When it’s one cell vs many
Most families do well with one cell — which is free. Holding two or more of your own (a Premium capability) makes sense when groups don’t overlap socially: you and your kids in one, you and your siblings in another, you and your closest friends in a third. Each is private from the others. A co-parented child spanning both parents’ homes is handled separately — they ride a parent’s Premium at no charge, so cost is never the reason a child loses a home.
