How to plan a Themed Night.
A Themed Night is an evening composed from a few of your cell's tools — picks from a deck, the captain choosing the theme, the joysticks orchestrating timing, a ritual closer at the end. This article walks through planning your first one as a family.
A Themed Night is an evening composed from tools your cell already has — decks, joysticks, and workshop pieces — orchestrated together rather than reinvented. To plan one, the cell's captain proposes a theme (movie, game, cook-together, story night), the cell confirms with a quick vote, and a tie is broken by a lottery so nobody feels overruled.
From there you compose the night by picking which decks, joysticks, and workshop pieces to make active, and you can save that setup as a template for next time. The night runs at your pace — no countdown, no points for finishing fast, and no penalty if someone steps away. When it ends, the surface offers a memory pack of photos, a shared note, and the cards you played, with no score and no public stats.
Pick the theme
Movie night, game night, cook-together, story night — pick one. The cell's captain proposes the theme; the cell confirms with a quick vote. If the vote ties, a lottery (see /help/lotteries) breaks it without anyone feeling overruled.
Compose the night
From the manifest, pick which decks (Date Night, Hard Conversations, Family Picks), which joysticks (the time-keeper, the score-keeper, the host), and which workshop pieces (a craft, a recipe, a story prompt) you want active. Themed Nights don't re-implement these tools — they orchestrate the ones you already have. Cells can save a manifest as a template for next time.
Tie-breakers when picks disagree
Inside the night, any sub-decision (which movie, which game) can be settled with a lottery. The fair-share floor (see /help/lotteries) keeps the same cell-mate from winning every pick — even on a streak of luck the floor weights the next draw to balance things out. The result shows the weighting attribution so the cell sees the floor working.
The night itself
Run it at the cell's pace. There is no countdown timer on a Themed Night; nobody gets points for finishing fast. Joysticks suggest a rhythm; you can ignore them. If someone needs to step away mid-evening, the night continues with the remaining cell-mates — no streak penalty, no "X bailed early" notification.
The morning after — memory, not score
When the night ends, the surface offers a memory pack — a few cell-mate-tagged photos, a short shared note, the deck cards you played. No points are awarded; no success-rating; no public stats. The night belongs to the cell, not to a leaderboard. ADR-095's principle, in one sentence, on /trust + /build-in-public.
Frequently asked questions
What do I actually need to set up a Themed Night?
Pick a theme (the captain proposes, the cell confirms by quick vote), then compose the night from the decks, joysticks, and workshop pieces you already have. You can save that composition as a template to reuse next time.
What happens if we can't agree on which movie to watch?
Any sub-decision inside the night can be settled with a lottery, and the fair-share floor keeps the same person from winning every pick. The result shows the weighting so you can see the floor working.
Is there a timer or a score for the night?
No. There's no countdown timer and nobody earns points for finishing fast — joysticks only suggest a rhythm you can ignore. The night runs entirely at the cell's pace.
What if someone has to leave partway through the evening?
The night simply continues with the remaining cell-mates. There's no streak penalty and no "X bailed early" notification.
